Columbus State University (CSU), in collaboration with the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIP), is offering a unique academic program in French Language and Fashion Industry, May 27-June 30, 2007. Located in Paris, the program welcomes undergraduate students from US colleges or universities who have completed at least one year of French studies or equivalent. For study in France, visas are required of US students. Application for a US passport must be made well in advance of departure date. Applications and more information on this program are available from the CSU Director, Ms. Jacqueline Konan konan_jackie@colstate.edu; or from the On-Site Academic Director, Dr. Samia I. Spencer frandfashion@charter.net.
One of the most beautiful cities in the world, Paris offers students an opportunity to visit some of Europe’s most renowned sites, including the Eiffel Tower, the Notre Dame cathedral, the Sacré-Coeur basilica, the Garnier and Bastille Operas, and the Louvre and Orsay museums. Participants in this program will also have a chance to stroll along the Champs Elysées, and enjoy many theaters, restaurants, and sidewalk cafés. At night, floodlights shine on Paris’s magnificent monuments, adding to its gleaming beauty and giving it the nickname City of Light. Classes will be held at the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, located in the distinguished 6th arrondissement, and housing will be in a student residence.
The program seeks to enhance the ability of students
to communicate more effectively in French, to develop their appreciation for French culture, and to
acquaint them with the art and industry of Parisian fashion. Classroom instruction will focus on the
four skills (speaking, writing, reading, and listening), while placing special emphasis on topics dealing
with couture, designers, collections, accessories, cosmetics, advertising, marketing and distribution,
and art history. In addition to classroom instruction, students will acquire first-hand experience in
the fashion world, through guided visits to renowned museums and fashion houses, and lectures by experts
in the field. In past years, participants visited, among others, the Louvre, the Musée de la Mode et
du Textile, the Musée Galliera, the Garnier and Bastille Operas, and the Musée Christian Dior in
Granville; the fashion houses of Hermès, Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Christian Lacroix and Sonia
Rykiel; in addition to the Comédie Française. They also attended the runway shows of the Ecole de
la Chambre syndicale de la Haute Couture et du Prêt-à-porter, at the Louvre; and the Ecole nationale
supérieure des Arts visuels de Belgique, in Brussels.
Classes and visits take place Monday through Friday, thus allowing students time to explore other parts
of France or Europe during the weekend, if they so wish. Students earn 6 semester hours of academic credit
in French (9 hours under special circumstances). Credit may count toward a major or minor in French, or
related area, or as an elective toward any major. To receive credit, students must attend at least 90%
of classes, and participate in at least 90% of program activities.
The basic cost of the program is $ 3973, including the $ 250 application fee,
to which should be added the amount of tuition for 6 semester hours of credit in French ($ 612), for
a total of $ 4585. This price includes tuition and fees in Paris, instructional materials, emergency
health insurance, processing of transcripts, required cultural activities, unlimited access to public
transportation within Paris, housing in a student residence, and lunch at the Chamber of Commerce on
class days. It does not include passport fees, optional excursions, personal expenses, or airfare.
Balance of program cost will be due in two installments: the first in the amount of
$ 1861.50 by March 1, 2007, and the second also in the amount of $ 1861.50 by April 2, 2007. The
amount of tuition, $ 612, will be due around mid April.
January 31, 2007, is the last day for a refund of the $ 250 application fee, when a written request to withdraw from the program is received by either Ms. Konan or Dr. Spencer. April 2, 2007, is the last day to withdraw from the program, when a written request is received by the CSU Campus Director or the On-Site Academic Director. Refunds after April 2, 2007, will not include the $ 250 application fee, and any amounts already disbursed by CSU. Submission of a paper or web application constitutes a formal commitment to participate in the 2007 CSU study abroad program entitled French Language and Fashion Industry in Paris, and acceptance of the policies outlined therein.
Columbus State University has the right to cancel the program due to low enrollment or unforeseen developments. If the program is cancelled before the program begins, participants will receive full refund of all amounts paid up to the time of cancellation. If the program is cancelled after it has started, there will be no refund unless the University is able to recover some funds from the providers. In that case, students will be reimbursed on a pro-rata basis.
In order to be admitted, students need to have completed no less than one year of French or equivalent, to be in goods standing. At all times, participants are expected to abide by the Columbus State University student conduct policies abroad and to comply with the laws and rules of the nations in which they will reside and the institutions that they will be attending, including those regarding sexual harassment, and drug and alcohol use.
